Linocut for Beginners: How to Make Your First Lino Print

Merchant: Lumikraft Lounge • Jaipur, Rajasthan • Support: customersupport@lumikraftlounge.shop

Linocut is the most beginner-friendly form of printmaking — bold, forgiving, and incredibly satisfying. With a block, a few tools, and some ink, you can make striking prints at home. Here's how.

What You'll Need

  • A lino block (or soft-cut block, which is easier to carve).
  • Carving gouges — a few different shapes (V and U).
  • A brayer — to roll out ink.
  • Block printing ink — water-based for easy cleanup.
  • Paper, a baren or spoon, and a smooth surface for inking.

Step-by-Step

  1. Design first. Keep it bold and simple; draw it onto the block. Remember text and the image print mirrored.
  2. Carve. Cut away everything you want to remain unprinted (white). Always push the tool away from your hand.
  3. Ink up. Roll a thin, even layer of ink on a flat surface, then roll it onto the block.
  4. Print. Lay paper on the block and rub firmly and evenly with a baren.
  5. Reveal. Peel back slowly to see your print.

Carving Tips

  • Use a sharp gouge — blunt tools slip and are dangerous.
  • Carve shallow first, then deepen as needed.
  • Use a bench hook to hold the block steady.

Printing Tips

  • Less ink is better — thin and even gives crisp results.
  • Rub the baren firmly across the whole design.
  • Print a few copies; they often improve after the first.

Safety First

Always carve away from your body, keep your free hand behind the tool, and use a bench hook to keep the block from slipping.
